Luxardo Original Maraschino Cherries are red cherries candied with Marasca syrup, a fruit cultivated and processed by Luxardo for distilling its renowned Maraschino, and for preparing, by infusion, the Marasca cherry liqueur named Sangue Morlacco. These signature cherries have been adding an Italian touch to cocktails and pastry flavorings since 1821, with the Luxardo company surviving two world wars. In fact at the end of WWII, with the devastation of the local area, now Croatia, the family fled to Italy with one Marasca cherry sapling and their secret recipe, and they have been producing in Italy ever since. No thickening agents of any type and no preservatives are used and the dark red color is all natural. The cherries go through a candying process which gives the fruit a distinct crispness that is not found in other brands. Their unique taste comes from the marasca red cherry syrup which is made starting from the same juice used to prepare the infusion for the Cherry Liqueur 'Sangue Morlacco'. The slightly nutty taste actually comes from the cherry pits, not almonds as believed by some. Today, like in the golden age of cocktails, incredible Luxardo Original Maraschino Cherries are used in the worlds’ best bars and mixologists as a garnish in their creations.
